As mentioned by Jody above, not finishing on time leads to a number of complaints. In the industry, it is not uncommon for contractors to give a wide range of build times in an effort to secure the job.
The only way to make sure that the contractor will be done on time is to have in writing that the contractor will pay a penalty each day the project extends beyond the original deadline.
Here is what we do: In our proposal, we write in how many days it will take us to finish your project. Any legitimate contractor that does this work every day should know how long it will take him to finish. If the contractor will not commit himself to a completion date, there is a very good chance the project will run past the completion date. We have the experience to know how long the project will take and we are so confident in our ability to complete the job on time we pay penalties each day we are late.

*The guarantee is for the original scope of work and not for additional work orders. The guarantee is contingent on having job access on a daily basis, and is only valid if payments are made according to the terms in the contract. All products supplied by the owner must be on site prior to work beginning.
We guarantee to be done on budget
The complaint right after not finishing on time is not finishing on budget. While there are legitimate extra costs that may come up in the course of the project, your contractor should know what they are. A common tactic used by contractors in Las Vegas to secure a job is to submit a low bid (excluding a lot of items they know must be added to complete the job) and then to add these costs in after the job has started. That is unethical.
There are times when there are potential additional costs inherent in the project (i.e. in an excavation job, caliche [a cementious material common to Las Vegas] may be encountered, which is much more expensive to remove than regular dirt).
We tell you up front what additional costs you may encounter during the course of your project, and these potential additional costs are in the proposal.
